Policy for Steel Shipping Containers Used as Storage
Effective: July 23, 2024 for Ranching and Urban Residential Districts
Shipping containers used for storage on any tract of land in Jackson County must meet the following criteria:
- The tract of land must include an existing primary structure.
- Containers size is allowed up to 53L x 8'6"W x 9'6"H (updated 7.23.24) o Container is used for private storage only and not to be used for retail, rental, or other similar business use. "Private storage" in this case means storage only of goods incidental to an existing permitted use and not available for public access or use. o Only nonhazardous materials shall be stored in container.
- Container must aesthetically match the existing primary structure, and any shipping labels, print, etc., must be removed or covered.
- Containers cannot be stacked on top of each other. o Number of containers is limited to the following:
- One (l) container on 334 acres
- Two (2) containers on 35+ acres o Container(s) being converted into a dwelling unit must follow and adhere to JacksonCounty's Special Use Permit application process, as well as the Jackson County Building Inspector's permitting process.
